ACS Uniform Information

The U.A.E. Ministry of Education requires students to wear a school uniform each day. ACS strives to comply with this mandate while providing options in your child's daily style. This section outlines the various options available for the School Uniform. Please make arrangements to purchase your child(ren)'s uniform well in advance of the beginning of the school year.

All ACS students (KG1 - Grade 12) are required to wear the official ACS uniform to school every day. Please see the detailed information below.

Lands' End is the primary supplier of our school uniform and they offer the full range of uniform tops on their website (landsend.com). See the FAQ below for detailed information on ordering from Land's End.

For convenience, our volunteer-run Viper Pit (spirit store), on the ACS Campus, will carry ACS uniform green polos and green T-shirts from Lands' End. They will not stock all styles that are available on the Lands' End website. For the 2020/21 school year, we strongly recommend ordering from Lands' End directly as access to the Viper Pit could be delayed.

Additionally, a local vendor, Zaks, will carry a limited selection of uniform items. These are produced by Zaks (not Lands' End) and will include black and gray T-shirts and polos. They will also carry sweatshirts in all four colors (evergreen, white, gray and black). Zaks is located in Mushrif Mall, Abu Dhabi and offers ordering directly from their website (https://zaksstore.com/shop/acs/en/).

Zaks is currently offering a promotion on ACS uniform items:

  • All uniform tops must be purchased from Lands' End, Viper Pit, or Zaks. This includes ACS logo sweatshirts, sweaters and fleece jackets.

  • Your child is not permitted to wear non-uniform tops during the school day. This includes sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets or other outerwear that does not have the ACS Logo.

  • If students are cold and need another layer of clothing, it must be approved ACS uniform outerwear. See the Sweatshirt section below.

UNIFORM BOTTOMS

ACS will not mandate a specific article of clothing for the bottoms, but the policy will require that:

  • As long as bottoms meet the above guidelines, you are welcome to buy them from any store you wish.

MUST-HAVES

  • All Middle School and High School students need a green ACS uniform polo shirt (any of the Lands' End styles) for school travel, band and choir concerts, etc.

  • The travel uniform also includes khaki or black pants or a skirt (knee-length or longer) that meet dress code standards. Shorts are not permitted for travel.

ACS Athletic tracksuits used by JV and Varsity teams, are not ACS School Uniforms. They may only be worn on team travel days.

Physical Education (PE) Uniforms

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE) UNIFORMS

Students in KG2 - Grade 12 are required to wear the ACS PE uniform for PE/gym classes. KG1 students have the option to wear the ACS PE uniform or their regular ACS Uniform on PE/gym class days.

Students in KG2 - Grade 5 wear their PE uniform all day on the days that they have PE class. Student in Grades 6 -12 change in and out of their PE uniform for PE class.

Our PE Uniform vendor is Kukri. PE Uniforms are not sold by Lands' End or Zaks. The ACS PE Uniform is stocked and sold through the Viper Pit.

The ACS PE Uniform is a green or white PE shirt, with the black PE shorts, as shown above.

If you require your child to wear pants for cultural or religious reason, or for warmth (for ES students), they must be plain black sports pants (no stripes, logos, insignias, etc). They can not be tights or yoga pants unless they are worn under the black PE shorts shown above. Additionally, the PE pants must be brought specifically for PE purposes, and cannot be the same pants worn as the school uniform that day.

SWIMSUITS

For students participating in swimming and aquatic activities, a regulation swimming suit is required (personal swimsuits are fine - one-piece suits for girls).

All student with shoulder-length hair need to wear a swim cap during their PE swimming unit.

Dress Down Days

  • Shoulders, back, and midriff should be fully covered

  • No skirts / shorts / dresses / skorts above the knee for Middle and High School students

The Administration may require a student to return home for the purpose of changing clothing.

Our policy is: Wear clothing that is respectful to yourself and others. The consequences for violation of the uniform policy are outlined in the student handbooks.

Do I have to buy the bottoms from Lands’ End?

Students can wear any bottom that meets dress code rules in solid khaki or black. That includes plain khaki or black sweatpants, shorts, jeans, skirts.

Are leggings allowed?

Leggings may be worn underneath knee-length shorts, dresses or skirts, but not as a stand alone bottom. Black or khaki jeans, pants, shorts, sweatpants are all acceptable.

The reasoning behind this decision is based upon our experience with the revealing nature of the leggings worn by MS and HS girls (this is also true with some girls in grade 5). Leggings material is much thinner than that of sweatpants, jeans, or even "tight" jeans, and in many cases is partly opaque or translucent. Over the past four years, we have had more dress code violations in MS and HS for inappropriate dress in this area than any other. Trying to be culturally respectful we made a decision to allow leggings only under a skirt or short.

What shoes do I have to wear?

Wear your own dress code compliant shoes; check your division-level handbook for dress code rule to ensure you’re safe and compliant. Shoes, socks, tights and leggings (under skirts/dresses) are all opportunities to express your own style.

Is everything sold in the Viper Pit allowed as a School Uniform?

No.

Shirts that are purchased at the Viper Pit, which are not specifically uniform tops, are not to be worn to school. The Viper logo shirts, the tie dyed tops, etc. are weekend wear and are not considered as a uniform top.

Can I wear my own sweatshirt over my uniform shirt?

No.

Lands’ End sweatshirts, sweaters, fleece jackets and vests with the ACS logo (see above), can be warn on top of, or in lieu of, the normal uniform top.

Sweatshirts and fleeces purchased from Viper Pit in evergreen, gray, white, black with the ACS Athletics or ACS Vipers logo on it can be warn on top of, or in lieu of, the normal uniform top.

  • The only grade that will be allowed to create a sweatshirt or top and wear it in place of a uniform top will be the graduating senior class.

  • Approved ACS Club/Athletic Team shirts are only permitted on designated days or at end of the school day.

Sweatshirts and jackets, either plain or with other logos, are not to be worn on campus during the school day.

My Nike basketball shorts are black. Can I wear those?

If the shorts/pants are solid khaki or black with the exception of a logo smaller than the logo on your uniform shirt, you can wear them. If the logo is larger than your uniform logo and/or there are stripes/lettering along the side of the shorts/pants, then they are not permitted.

Do I have to order online?

Inventory will be available for purchase in Viper Pit throughout the year. Lands’ End orders can be shipped anywhere in the world and if you create an account, they’ll email you with special shipping offers and sale events throughout the year.

Are Athletic Tracksuits, or Team Hoodies allowed?

Athletic tracksuits and team hoodies are not an ACS School Uniform. MESAC, JV, and Varsity teams may design a sweatshirt to represent their team. These sweatshirts must adhere to all of the following rules:

  • Must be in one of the four approved colors: Evergreen, Gray, White, or Black

  • Must include the ACS logo

  • Must be approved by the Director of Athletics and Activities before they are ordered and worn to school

  • Can ONLY be warn on Thursdays and spirit/game days

Can I label or personally identify my Uniforms?

To enable our students to identify their lost uniforms, jackets, sweaters etc, and to help with sorting laundry, we are allowing students to have their first and last initial only to be embroidered on the right sleeve. THIS IS OPTIONAL.

The two (2) initials should be on the right-hand sleeve using the same font and size that is used on the uniforms by Lands' End. The size should be inch/same size as the word “ACS” on the uniforms. Font should be block font and color is evergreen. Please use white font on evergreen colored sleeves.
